I'll be honest --- I am so used to working on 'self' driven projects that the bread+butter (and sometimes the icing on the cake) projects don't push me to do my best.

I think it could be that with 'self driven projects one has FREEDOM, which is in most cases good...
rather than B+B project that you know can be taken to a greater level but will not, 'cos of the client trying to pay as little as possible for the project or client simply being personal, you have to do / add something not cos it adds value to the project - but cos the client likes it!
